Welcome to Sati Haus!
Sati Haus, located in the heart of the Lüneburg Heath, about an hour away from
Hamburg, Germany, is a small meditation centre offering long weekend retreats on a
regular basis.
The retreats offer a balanced approach to the practice of Buddhist meditation as
found in the Theravada tradition.** Although the retreats are Buddhist in outlook,
participants need not themselves be Buddhists. We welcome everyone to these
retreats, whether beginner or experienced meditator, of any faith, or none.
We aim to offer resources to help nurture and sustain a fulfilling and effective
meditation practice. Emphasis is placed upon developing attention, sensitivity and
awareness in sitting and walking meditation. The teachers provide guidance through
meditation instruction, talks and individual meetings. The talks aim to clarify the
nature of meditation practice and explore its application in daily life. Apart from the
times of talks and communication with the teacher, the retreats are held in silence,
an atmosphere that supports and facilitates the deepening of meditation and the
unfolding of insight.
All retreats are suitable for beginners and experienced meditators. Sati Haus also
offers more extended practice periods after a retreat for experienced meditators
who would like to practice in a supportive environment.
Among our guest teachers are both lay teachers and ordained Theravada monks
and nuns. Our lay teachers are affiliated to the Theravada tradition and have been
authorized by their own teachers. Both lay and ordained teachers have many years
of teaching experience.
Our teachers usually speak either German or English as their first language, and all
have experience with international groups. Translators will be available to aid
communication in both languages, if necessary, throughout the retreat and
especially during talks and question and answer sessions.
Sati Haus is a non-profit organization and the cost of the retreat is calculated to
cover running costs only.
At the end of the retreat everyone has the opportunity to give a gift of dana* to the
teacher or monastery, if they so choose.
