What is Theravada Buddhism?
What is dana?

What is Theravada Buddhism?
This is the form of Buddhism found mainly in Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. It is the
oldest living tradition. The teachings are based on the word of the Buddha as found
in the earliest texts and their commentaries.

What is dana?
Dana means open-hearted generosity. Our teachers do not charge for the
teachings they give at Sati Haus. At the end of each retreat participants are given
the opportunity to offer a donation towards the teacher's support. This is an invitation
to participate in the spirit of generosity that has sustained this tradition and teaching
for more than 2,500 years. Over the centuries it is this generosity that has enabled
teachers to continue teaching and sustained the transmission of the teaching to new
generations of meditators. Dana is voluntary in nature and no fixed amount is
expected. There will be no pressure to donate but it is hoped that each participant
will recognise the economic realities of nurturing the teachings here in Western
countries and determine his or her own capacity to help.
Dana is a way that we can choose to express our gratitude and take responsibility for
ensuring that teachers, many of whom are full-time Dhamma workers, continue to be
able to share the teachings with future meditators here at Sati Haus and elsewhere.
